Carl Levin Dodges Rachel Maddow on Torture Prosecution
Last night, Rachel Maddow asked SASC chairman Carl Levin the obvious follow-up question: should Bush and Rumsfeld be prosecuted for war crimes?

Why was Levin being so evasive?
Clearly Levin was drawing a line between the regular military - which he oversees as chair of SASC - and the CIA, which is "overseen" by the Jay Rockefeller and the Senate Intelligence Committee. We know that the worst forms of torture, including waterboarding, were done by CIA operatives, not by the Army. Levin couldn't investigate CIA torture, and Rockefeller refused to, so Levin wants President Obama to appoint a bipartisan Commission to do so.
That's fine as far as it goes. Rockefeller should have led an investigation, but he's a spineless coward and his Republican counterpart, Pat Roberts, is a torture-loving fascist. If Obama appoints a Commission, Rockefeller and his fellow Democrats won't have to worry about attacks by Roberts and his fellow Republicans.
But a Presidential Commission to investigate CIA torture is not at all incompatible with simultaneous prosecution of Pentagon torture. So why is Levin mixing up the two? Why doesn't he advocate prosecution for the Pentagon torture he documented in his report, while also advocating a Presidential Commission on CIA torture? Someone needs to ask him.

waiting for direction
Leadership has been described as the “process of social influence in which one person is able to enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task (wikipedia). To me it seems as if in our elected officials as a whole most will only go after someone if they can find others to join in. Kind of like in grade school or something.
I suppose no one wants to stick their political neck out unless they are assured of support. And it is that type of atmosphere that appears to exist in the political arena, I suppose the "live to fight another day rule applies".
I believe there are those who secretly approve of such action though I am not saying Levin in particular) and are merely waiting for President-Elect Obama to take office and put the course of our country on his leadership.
But I say if we are indeed to be leaders of the free world as we espouse to be, then we must once again adhere to a higher moral standard as well as upholding our laws as written in our constitution, bill of rights, etc. These are the things that "one nation under god" engage in and what true leaders live by.
It is my hope that once the new administration comes in that we will again hold those elected to serve to the rule of the law as well as a higher moral standard, and punish those who have indeed broken the rules of law.
America is not Amerika or little germany or little russia and must never become as such. There are those in our country who do not hold to higher moral standards regarding what is acceptable, and how they treat others, and what laws they hold in contempt, who have systematically infiltrated our society on all levels including leadership, There are also many Americans who have experienced those types of horror through family members of the camps and we deplore such actions from our own country,
And finally, while some change is good disregarding or changing laws (especially in secret) to fall to a lower base nature where anything goes regarding our actions must never ever be allowed to stand. For this is America where we are led by and hold to higher power with a standard of living which includes moral structure and the rule of laws meant for a nation of leadership and purpose.
yes they are
waiting for direction as you say.
sadly, that makes them "followers" instead of "leaders."
that's why we have to put as much pressure on them as possible to lead instead of follow.
