The Alito Betrayal

We, the voters who elect Democrats in every election, were utterly and completely betrayed today by 19 Democratic Senators that we elected, all of whom can be reached at 888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641:

Akaka (HI), Baucus (MT), Bingaman (NM), Byrd (WV), Cantwell (WA), Carper (DE), Conrad (ND), Dorgan (ND), Inouye (HI), Johnson (SD), Kohl (WI), Landrieu (LA), Lieberman (CT), Lincoln (AR), Nelson (FL), Nelson (NE), Pryor (AR), Rockefeller (WV), Salazar (CO)

There was no reason for this betrayal. We only needed 40 39 of the 45 Democrats to sustain a filibuster. We could have won even if 5 6 Democrats who were flat-out stupid enough to believe Alito's lies (like Robert Byrd and Kent Conrad) had voted against the filibuster. (1)

Every Democratic Senator knew what was at stake - both in the rulings Justice [sic] Alito will make for the rest of his life, and in the anger - even rage - that will greet their decision to betray us.

So why did these Democrats decide to stab us all in the back?

For one simple reason: because we let them.

Democratic candidates - at every level - take us, the Democratic base, completely for granted.

They ask us for money and we give it to them - with no strings attached. They ask us for votes and we give it to them - with no strings attached.

They are not accountable because we don't hold them accountable.

That must change - and with your help, I will make sure that it does change.

In the coming weeks, I will offer a plan for holding elected Democrats accountable. The plan will be based on some core principles:

  • We have a right to be furious at the Democrats who betrayed us - and we have a right to share our fury with them directly (888-355-3588 or 888-818-6641), as well as the DSCC (202-224-2447) and DNC (202-863-8000).
  • The Democratic Party belongs to the people who vote for Democrats, not to the elected officials, party bureaucrats, and rich consultants whose power and wealth comes entirely from us.
  • We, the Democratic Wing of the Democratic Party, represent the majority of all Americans on every issue Americans care about, and we will win majorities in every state (almost!) if we fight as hard as Republicans do for our issues
  • We must find politically strategic ways to channel our anger towards constructive goals, rather than the obvious destructive ones (like electing even more Republicans to accelerate the rise of Fascism in America).

I'll say a lot more in the days and weeks to come - stay tuned!

(1) The official Roll Call shows only 53 of 55 Republicans voted (Ensign and Hagel were absent) so Frist needed 7 Democrats to reach 60 and end the filibuster.

Update 1: Our friends at the Backbone Campaign created "Thank" and Spank" forms to send to the good & bad Senators - enjoy!

Update 2: Great blogs by John KerryCultureKitchen, BuzzFlashRob KallCrooksAndLiars, John Conyers...

Update 3: What shall we call our neo-fascist Supreme Court? A reader suggests the "RATS Court" for the Gang of 4: Roberts-Alito-Thomas-Scalia. I think we have a winner!

Which D Senators voted yes on cloture and are up for reelection? The National Party will say, keep these and defeat Repugs. I say defeat Repugs and spineless Dems--they ultimately have the same effect. How do I look my grandchildren in the face and say I did nothing to preserve the rights I have enjoyed for them?!

Yesterday I emailed every Dem senator, today I called the fence-sitters, and to all I pledged to contribute to their primary opponent if they didn't support the filibuster. I will keep that pledge. Period. The vote today will prove to be the most dangerous vote taken in my generation. The cowards in our party are have got to go. Please, someone post the names of the cowards.

Any democrat who voted for Alito should be banned from support by the DNC. It is an outrage to vote NO on Alito and not support a filibuster. Our Supreme Court just got firmly into the hands of Scalia, Roberts, and Thomas. Our Civil Liberties will be a distant second.

Part of the problem is the democratic party itself. Throgh weakness such as their hollow votes in saying No but not supporting a filibuster gives truth to their actions. Before like minded democrats and moderate republicans can once again have a real voice in America, these wimps must be driven out through our dollars and grass root efforts. The Court is the last place where Americans can expect Justice. That was lost today. Expect a further trampling of our Constitutional rights and the Bill of Rights. It is a sad day for a wimped out party!! Expect to lose in 2008 unless a real reassement is done! As of today, I am officially Independent and pissed off!!

Somebody please send out a list so that we can all contribute to challengers who would have had the spine to stand up and say NO to Alito for the Supreme Court not just in words but in actions! I Thank this website for getting me involved and writing my so called elected representatives for the first time in my life. Kudo's to Senator Kennedy for giving a wonderful speech of truth!

I agree that we must stand up! Howard Dean needs to respond-NOW!

I pray that Howard Dean has a clue as to the anger we all feel in the betrayal by all of those who took a real objective look at the Alito nomination for what it was! He needs to be a real leader and drum the Liberman's and Byrd's out!! For those who were reluctant such as Senator Obama, at least he had the heart to vote his convictions. That is more than I can say for the other weaklings who made history today. What would John Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and the other great leaders say about the state of the democratic party today?

Thankfully, my one Democratic Senator wasn't one of these slimeballs, but I am still disgusted.

Not a penny to the DCCC or any other Democratic Fundraising organization that doesn't promise to deny ALL monies to any of the 18/19 turncoats.

And NO, I will NOT vote for any of them and will urge all my friends to vote against them as well.

The old saw about "If you don't support me, you will get that horrible Republican, so you MUST support me," doesn't hold any water if the Democrat votes with the Republican when it really matters.

If you can't beat these 18/19 back in their primaries, sit on your hands in the general election or vote your true conscience and support a third or fourth party candidate.

The DEMOs must go!!!

Not so up here, Charlie. Maria Cantwell (D-WA), one of our two Washington State Democratic Senators, turned out to be spineless. Regardless of how she votes on confirmation, not voting for the filibuster along with the other Democratic traitors is functionally a shoe-in for Benito, er, I mean, Alito. She might as well be a Republican for all the good she did us.

For the record, copied below is the canned reply I received this evening from her office - her only "response" to my last ditch e-mail to her, urging her to vote for the filibuster.

RDB/ENDIT

"Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves."

------------

Dear Mr. Brock,

Thank you for writing to express your views on the nomination of Samuel Alito to be Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court. I appreciate your input on this critical issue.

As you may know, the President nominates individuals to serve on the United States Supreme Court and it is the constitutional responsibility of the Senate to advise and consent on the suitability of those individuals to serve in the position for which they have been nominated. While I am disappointed that President Bush did not choose one of America 's many well-qualified female jurists to replace Justice O'Connor, I look forward to the debate before us.

I take my Constitutional responsibility as a Senator to advise and consent on executive nominations extremely seriously. While I recognize the privilege of the President to select his nominees, I believe it is critical that we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of each nominee's qualifications, since Supreme Court judges are expected to impartially interpret our nation's laws during their lifetime terms. Please be assured that I am committed to making carefully considered and independent judgments on every nominee based on a thorough review of his or her records. Of course, it is vital that any lifetime appointee to the highest court in the nation possess the breadth of experience, character, and wisdom necessary to review the most significant, complex, and far-reaching legal questions of our time

Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. Finally, you may be interested in signing up for my weekly update for Washington state residents. Every Monday, I provide a brief outline about my work in the Senate and issues of importance to Washington state. If you are interested in subscribing to this update, please visit my website at http://cantwell.senate.gov. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I may be of any assistance in the future.

I'm so tired of spinless Democrats that go along with anything the corrupt Republicans want. This was the last straw for me. I want these people OUT. What they did today, to turn their backs on all the men and women who have worked so hard for years to keep this from happening is just too much.
The war in Iraq, the corrupt elections, the Enron scandal, Tom DeLay, outing a CIA agent, 9/11, Katrina, god it goes on and on and these people do NOTHING.

My Message to the "Gang of Fifteen" Democratic Turncoats!

Senator;

This is the message that I sent out to all my family and progressive friends. I hope that you will get the message and in the future stand up for the American people and the sound values of the Democratic Party. We don’t need or want Republican clones in the Party.

The message that was sent:
The Senate voted today (1/31/06) and confirmed the nomination of Judge Alito as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. The vote was 58 Yeas to 42 Nays. If the Democratic Senators that voted Nay on this conformation vote had voted to sustain the filibuster yesterday, the cloture vote would have failed and Judge Alito's nomination would have gone down in flames. There are 15 Democratic Senators that voted this way. So it seems that these Senators wanted Alito confirmed, thus the vote for ending the filibuster, and the Nay vote on conformation. These 15 Senators knew if it came down to just an up or down vote that the Republicans had enough votes for conformation even if they voted Nay on the conformation vote.

I feel that they did this to appease their conservative constituents while trying to show support for their progressive base. This is a blatant example of the gutless positions that some of our Democratic Representatives take on hot issues. As far as I'm concerned these are the worst kind of Democrats. No wonder the progressive base is so angry at these gutless wonders. The only three Democrats that voted Yea in both instances were Senators Byrd (WV), Nelson (NE) and Johnson (SD). I have respect for these Senators because at least they voted their true positions on Judge Alito and didn't try to play political games. Also, if you notice that the Republicans all voted Yea in one voting block, except for Senator Chafee (R-RI). This loyalty to the Party position on issues is why they have become the Majority Party in Congress and now have the Supreme Court as well as the White House.

If you want to call, email or write to these turncoats here is the list:

Akaka (HI) , Baucus (MT), Bingaman (NM), Cantwell (WA), Carper (DE), Dorgan (ND), Inouye (HI), Kohl (WI), Landrieu (LA), Lieberman (CT), Lincoln (AR), Nelson (FL), Pryor (AR), Rockefeller (WV), Salazar (CO)

If these Democratic Senators don't get some spine and stand up to the Republicans we might as well settle for the fact that the Democratic Party will continue to be the Minority Party.

I do not understand these people. But I feel I must caution and warn. Letting our anger cause us to make poor choices, like voting for Republicans, is not using common sense. There has to be a better expression of our anger than to just vote for Republicans as a way to strike out. It will only make things worse. We have to let those democrats know that they are being watched, and we have to find out who is running against them in the primaries. We even have time to help promote candidates. But we cannot just mindlessly vote for republicans because of the ingnorance of some so-called democrats. Let's look for the better path.

Worst thing you could do is vote Republican out of anger. Look, we have a core group of 25 committed, passionate democrats. Screw the others, they are the losers. Let's go with the winners and build from there. We need to tell the Core Group of Twenty-Five how much we appreciate them remaining true. From two to twenty-five in two days. We helped make that happen. It is not time to despair. We should be celebrating. And Alito is on notice, he will think twice before he makes a stupid decision. (Can't blame me for trying to find the silver lining)

I think of it this way - 14-17 Democratic Senators just took the first step of their journey out of the Senate today. I'm e-mailing every one of them to let them know that they will not be forgotten - whether it's this year or in 4 years.

Thank you for reminding us the statement made by Obama on the last weekend that the Democrats should win elections instead of using political maneuvers. Outrageous. That is so insulting to our intelligence. Did anyone tell Obama Republicans win elections by stealing them and bringing back Jim Crow tactics to his people, that is, if he hasn't forgotten where he came from. I think I read somewhere that he has embraced the DLC group of Democrats who are Bushites lite like Lieberman and H.Clinton.

I agree -- These two so-called separate parties are merging into one because the politicians calling themselves Democrats only ran on the Democratic ticket when they started out because someone else was running on the Republican ticket. But they wanted to get into politics, so they decided to call themselves a Democrat. It really feels like we have a one-party system in this country. The government versus US.

The Party Needs To Be Reconstructed From the Ground Up

  • jcurzon's picture

The Democratic Party does not need adjustment; it does not need to rephrase or reframe its electoral approach or policy positions. It needs to start over. It is bankrupt. I cannot have much hope for a party that shows so little courage against a President whose approval ratings hover in the low 40's.

I think this underlines, again, the lack of imagination in the party leadership. The party does not consistently stand for any cohesive agenda. The foundations need to be revisited; the foundations need to be remade. Question all the fundamental "Democratic" positions; don't try to evaluate their popularity--try to evaluate whether they are valid, and if not, what replacement positions have a better claim to validity? The party doesn't have a cohesive, persuasive view of the world, or of the best role of policy in dealing with that world. It just doesn't have it. Most of the Democratic pols lack conviction on matters like this vote because, ultimately, they don't have a worldview that holds together, so they find themselves more influenced by perceived public opinions than by any respectable thought process.

We need to start with first principles, and try to generate some leaders loyal to those principles--loyal not because they think those principles popular, but because they think them right.

World View

  • Jim's picture
    Jim
Want to meet our members? Click 'Join' above!

Democrats represent the majority in both the House and Senate.

Republicans the minority.

The Republican World View is that of a prick, and a changing with the wind one at that.
Six years ago, Conservatives would have been fighting the very fights true Democrats continue to fight: stopping government intrusion, reckless Wars, Deficits, etc.

The Democratic World View is simple:

More friggen cash for the bottom 90% and government and Robertson off your ass.

Blogs like this one and others have been fighting to get the word out on the Democratic World View for quite some time. Here is a slice of mine: http://www.democrats.com/node/7018

We are buying media but that needs to increase exponentially.

Then Why Are Democrats In the Minority?

  • jcurzon's picture
    jcurzon
Want to meet our members? Click 'Join' above!

I wish you were right, but I don't believe you are. I don't think the situation is that simple. Conservatives dominate now, and conservatives have been fighting for their agenda for a very long time--extending back to and before Goldwater, and certainly before six years ago.

I'm an anti-conservative, because I am opposed to what conservatives really stand for, so I certainly wouldn't want the Dems to fight for the causes conservatives were championing six years ago, or sixty years ago.

Anwyay, I realize much of this is semantic. But I still believe more than minor adjustments are needed; I think the foundations need to be revisited.

jcurzon http://etymos.com

And I am revisiting them

  • Jim's picture
    Jim
Want to meet our members? Click 'Join' above!

And I am revisiting them from the ground up. So have many others. Democrats remain in the MAJORITY however so be careful in your analysis. The Republic is tilted however, granted, but not the populace.

The specific problems we face are threefold:

1) lack of media (no message is helpful if we can’t get it out)
2) DLC false “centrism” with anemic support for the poor and middle class does not trump the easy Right Wing way out: political hand grenades: abortion, prayer in school, etc.
3) Exactly what you noted---but I am arguing we are on it.

I would be happy to speak at length with you about this but I must run. Family pizza and I need the break.

I think we need to work with the 25 who showed courage and replace the 19 who did not. We need people who will work together as a team for our values, not people like the 19 who are only looking out for themselves.

Sick at heart

This is a letter I sent to my senator, copied the DCCC and DNC...

Bravo, Sen. Boxer, bravo.

I am listening to your speech after the vote for cloture and your point about the Supreme Court belonging to the people of the United States, not the president or Congress, brings tears to my eyes. This is a very, very sad day for our beloved country, and a disaster for ourselves and our children.

The democratic party has failed its constituents, the constitution, and, above all, the people of the United States. Not only will the 19 democrats who voted for cloture never be forgiven, but the party itself will never be forgiven as this failure represents the apex of the party's bumbling in the face of an extremely easy opponent.

Although we have felt that we have not been represented by our elected officials for a long while now, this vote was absolutely the last straw. Long time contributors to all democratic causes, my husband and I will NEVER give another dime to the democratic party or any of its candidates.

I'm so sorry that this is the case. You personally have represented us well, but clearly it is time to send a stronger message to our "opposition" party, and apparently the only thing that elected officials understand is the withdrawal of support, both in terms of votes and money.

I hope that you and your colleagues have the chance to do some meaningful soul searching about your (the party's) failure to provide meaningful and united opposition in the face of such disasterous failings on the part of the administration and Republican-led Congress over the past 5 years. If your strategy was to attract "centrist" voters, I appeal to you to remember a quote by FDR (paraphrasing), "When faced with a decision between a Republican and a conservative democrat, a conservative will choose the Republican every time." Indeed, in pandering so strongly to the center, the party has allowed the entire spectrum to shift to the right. Better to convince the center that your liberal philsophies are just as valid than validate those of the right by pandering to the center.

Once again, thanks, Barbara, for everything you've done. Tired of waiting for our elected leaders to lead and having to apply extreme pressure on them to do the right thing, we will try our luck somewhere else.

But there is no elsewhere.

But there is no elsewhere. We have a Core Group of Twenty-Five dedicated and committed democrats in the traditional sense. The 19 turncoats will fall away and be lost in the pages of history. But we can rebuild with the twenty-five that held the line. And we need to let them know that THEY have our support, but the others should know they no longer do. Just my opinion. But put youself in the place of the 25. They remained true, and they do not deserve derision. I say let them know we are with them, and let them be good leaders. Boxer is a great woman, and no matter what kind of poison the right has spread about Kennedy, he remains true to the principles of liberal democracy. His speech this afternoon was one of the best I've heard lately.
