Kerry won't run for president in '08
By Rick Klein, Globe Staff | January 24, 2007
WASHINGTON --An emotional Senator John F. Kerry today said he will not run in the 2008 presidential race and vowed to use his Senate perch to hasten an end to the war in Iraq, saying he would work with lawmakers from both parties to reverse President Bush's troop "surge" and force him to withdraw virtually all troops from Iraq by early next year. Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, used the unusual forum of the Senate floor to announce his political ambitions. Choking up as he harkened back to his service in Vietnam, Kerry said he would work to make sure the next president doesn't have to cope with the consequences of a "wider war" sparked by the failed policy in Iraq....(full report)

You can read his prepared statement below, sent out in an email yesterday...
I wanted to start by just saying thank you -- thank you to each and every one of you who have come together in the johnkerry.com community.

Thanks to you, we have a new Democratic Congress that is fighting to stop the administration's disastrous course in Iraq, thanks to you we can be a Congress that addresses issues like climate change and health care, and thanks to you, change is coming to Washington.

Over the last two years, when you could've walked off the field after getting knocked down in 2004, you didn't walk away, you kept fighting. Together, three million strong, you helped provide $14 million to more than 260 candidates, committees and progressive causes. Nineteen of those candidates received over $100,000 each in donations from our community. Just think of the special support that you helped us provide to veterans running for office -- helping to make Chris Carney, Tim Walz, Joe Sestak, and Patrick Murphy members of Congress today. And because you dug in early when a lot of people said it couldn't be done, you helped a courageous Vietnam veteran Jim Webb on his march to become the 51st Senator and give Democrats our majority in the Senate.

I hope you are as proud of what you've accomplished as I am. But this isn't a time to rest on our accomplishments.

The work isn't over. Today I hope you'll help me with another big mission.

35 years ago, I got into public life to end a war that was wrong. I believe now as strongly as I did then that it is wrong to ask more young Americans to die for anyone's mistakes. And I believe that a Congress that shares responsibility for getting us into this war must bear responsibility for getting us out.

Americans went to the polls and voted for change in Iraq. They sent a strong and clear message to all of us, on both sides of the aisle, that they wanted real change in Iraq. They certainly did not vote for us to sit by while some national leaders actually advocate escalating the war and sending more American troops into the middle of an Iraqi civil war. We must stand for a change in Iraq, or we don't stand for anything at all.

This mission, this responsibility, is something all of us must accept. As someone who voted for the resolution that gave the president the authority to go to war, I feel the weight of a personal responsibility to act.

I sought the presidency to lead us on a different course. There are powerful reasons to want to continue that fight now. But I've concluded this isn't the time for me to mount a presidential campaign. It is the time to put my energy to work as part of the new Democratic majority in the Senate, to do all I can to end this war and strengthen our security and our ability to fight the real war on terror.

The people of Massachusetts have given me an incredible privilege to serve in the Senate, to represent the birthplace of freedom, the cradle of liberty, and a state where in Faneuil Hall patriotic dissenters stood on principle. I want to continue representing Massachusetts, and that's why I am running for reelection so I can use my voice all day every day to end this war and galvanize grassroots action to force Washington and our Democratic Party to live up to its responsibility.

Together, all of us, starting with the three million of you who have built this online community, must remain steadfast in protecting the principles we fought for every day of our campaign. You have a responsibility to urge those who are running this time to step up and address those issues, and particularly on Iraq to find not just a new way forward, but the right way forward.

Above all else, the mission we must all join is to end the war in Iraq.

Our first step toward that goal is to force President Bush to set a deadline to redeploy our troops.

I hope you will come to http://www.setadeadline.com and take the opportunity to speak out on the importance of setting a deadline to redeploy our troops and bring our heroes home. Speak out at http://www.setadeadline.com.

Now that a new Democratic Congressional majority has convened in the U.S. Capitol, a deadline must be set. Working together as Americans, holding leaders accountable, is our best hope to ensure that it is.

Please come to http://www.setadeadline.com and get on board.

Thank you,

John Kerry

He did include a fund-raising plea at the end of the email but I thought that a bit gauche, you know? "I'm not running, but send me money anyway"...

I wish with all my heart you are right and prove me wrong.

I am a "Kerry doubter". I like him better than Obama or Hillary.

Kerry is still the best Democrat for THE job.

Inspite of John Kerry's attack on Walmart I still think he is the best of what the Democratic Party has shown so far. He at least strives to be honest and admits when he has made mistakes. Most other candidates, Democrat or Republican, have little or no integrity at all. Clinton and Gore are bad jokes and lightning rods as well. We are in need of a candidate that has integrity and a track record for bringing all sides together. We have had enough of right wing/left wing political hacks trying to shove their flavor of stuff down our throats. Neither one has any thing to offer America or Americans. They only tend to divide and conquer then destroy. America needs a choice for 2008 between a decent Republican and a decent Democrat. Not far left or right dupes like we have had in the past.

At Least Clinton & Gore were much better than these facist thugs we have to put up with today.
thankfully had a surplus under the clinton adminstration
and at least clinton admits his mistakes

This bush regime has truly ruined america and the world and brought it into the lowest level this country has ever seen since the nixon adminstration.

They make that adminstration look like shakespeare

The Only reason you can't say the bush regime has little or no integrity is that this regime doesn't even deserved to be mention in the same sentence as integrity.

Unfortunately, Kerry is a member of the Republican-Lite DLC, along with Hillary, Biden, Bayh, Warner, the Nelsons, and last but not least, Joe Liberman.

Not only is Kerry a DLC'er, but during his campaign...

he rolled into Iowa for their cocktail party(no primary election in Iowa)and took the place like a tidal wave. Built up some real momentum and took time off to go sailboarding and then skiing.

During the Ohio debacle, he told us all loudly and clearly that he would fight to the last vote--and 24 hours later, he just up and quit.

Since his failed bid for the top slot, he pops up and down like a 'pop goes the weazel' character with his mighty pronouncements...and then the lid gets slammed down and he is unseen and unheard until someone turns his crank.

Another 'all hat, no cattle' kinda guy.

And was very, very disappointed after the first debate. During that first debate, he was great! I really thought he had it in the bag.

From that point on, Kerry never looked or sounded like a man who really wanted to win an election! He looked and sounded more like simply a traveling speech maker. Not really interested. And he rarely touched on a host of issues that Bush was extremely vulnerable on: the environment, wages, health care, etc.

But then, right after the election, he came back out breathing fire. A little too little a little too late.

Therefore, I have to agree with Bill's sentiment. I'm not particularly a Kerry fan.

Terry

Kerry a disappointment

Where is that extra money that was supposed to be used to force investigations, etc. of the election?

Kerry made me very angry with his refusal to demand recounts in Ohio and Florida. He like Gore won but let it go.

How many times do we have to work our butts off to be let down in elections? My patience has just about had it. Does any Democrat really want to win? Think about it.

Congress allow the President their powers as detailed in the Constitution. It's not just abuse of power by Bush but by Congress. Now the new committee on Walter Reed problems are pick by Bush (like all the rest which covered up real truth). Congress does over sight. Do it and declare yet another commission full of picked/non-elected x-government people null and void. They are not elected or in office to do their job for us.

They are used to cover up the crime not find the reason. We all know what those are. This administration hates the American people and that includes our military.

Its called the President's Commission...Walter Reed. Emm let me see...it is a mess and more money will fix it. OR we did our best with what we have will be the final conclusion. Bush, Inc. (Rumsfeld) won't be blamed.
