BBC - CIA role claim in Kennedy killing - New video and photographic evidence that puts three senior CIA operatives at the scene of Robert Kennedy's assassination has been brought to light.

It reveals that the operatives and four unidentified associates were at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles in the moments before and after the shooting on 5 June, 1968. The CIA had no domestic jurisdiction and some of the officers were based in South-East Asia at the time, with no reason to be in Los Angeles.

Kennedy had just won the California Democratic primary on an anti-War ticket and was set to challenge Nixon for the White House when he was shot in a kitchen pantry. A 24-year-old Palestinian, Sirhan Sirhan, was arrested as the lone assassin and notebooks at his house seemed to incriminate him. However, even under hypnosis, he has never been able to remember the shooting and defence psychiatrists concluded he was in a trance at the time. At first, it seems an open-and-shut case. On June 5 1968, Robert Kennedy wins the California Democratic primary and is set to challenge Richard Nixon for the White House. After midnight, he finishes his victory speech at the Ambassador hotel in Los Angeles and is shaking hands with kitchen staff in a crowded pantry when 24-year-old Palestinian Sirhan Sirhan steps down from a tray-stacker with a "sick, villainous smile" on his face and starts firing at Kennedy with an eight-shot revolver.

As Kennedy lies dying on the pantry floor, Sirhan is arrested as the lone assassin. He carries the motive in his shirt-pocket (a clipping about Kennedy's plans to sell bombers to Israel) and notebooks at his house seem to incriminate him. But the autopsy report suggests Sirhan could not have fired the shots that killed Kennedy. Witnesses place Sirhan's gun several feet in front of Kennedy, but the fatal bullet is fired from one inch behind. And more bullet-holes are found in the pantry than Sirhan's gun can hold, suggesting a second gunman is involved. Sirhan's notebooks show a bizarre series of "automatic writing" - "RFK must die RFK must be killed - Robert F Kennedy must be assassinated before 5 June 68" - and even under hypnosis, he has never been able to remember shooting Kennedy. These guys were there or not is basically irrelevant to me. It was a descent video however. Many of these things I read about long ago.

In this case what really seems like proof the official line isn't true is the point blank shot behind the ear. From what all witnesses said, Sirhan's position during the shooting is inconsistent with a shot that left that kind of wound in his head. It would have to have been fired with the barrell very close to the spot where the bullet entered, within inches. Sirhan couldn't have hit him with a point blank shot to the back of the head standing several feet in front of him as all the witnesses claimed he was.

That is what I believe calls this case into question. That coupled with the fact that the photos of the crime seem to show a discrepency between the number of bullets fired and the number Sirhan's gun would hold. All witnesses testified he wouldn't have been able to reload, yet pictures have indicated there could have been as many as twelve bullets fired. Sirhan had an eight shot revolver.

What is really frustrating in this case is that all the evidence, ceiling tiles, door faces that are shown in these photos that could clear these things up were "routinely burned" to make way for other evidence in storage, so any re-examining of hard evidence is impossible. If I remember right, Darryl Gates of Rodney King fame was the lead detective on the case.

These are things that are slightly taboo on here and I am not trying to raise the ire of my sitemates. The only point I have ever tried to make is that looking at all the info it appears something doesn't fit. All the rest is speculation but when you have a point blank shot behind the ear, and the shooter was supposed to be in front, there has to be a satisfactory explanation for that, besides another lone-nut with a magic bullet.

I don't think it is looney, or un-American to wonder and be able discern the truth when you attempt to study history. I hope some people will go and look at some of what is said about the wound behind RFK's ear, because in the pics you see of him, you can clearly see him bleeding out of it. If the burn pattern around that wound is consistent with a the entry of a point blank shot as many argue, isn't there a problem with the official version? That is all I have ever asked.
