Bush's 16 Words Exposed as Blair's Big Lie

Remember Bush's infamous 16 words in his January 2002 State of the Union that set the stage for war 2 months later - and ultimately led to Plamegate?

The British government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa.

Bush had to triangulate off "the British government" because the CIA repeatedly rejected the forged Italian documents on which this lie was based.

Tony Blair's government admits the Italian documents were forgeries. But for two years, they have insisted they had "independent" evidence, which they have nevertheless refused to reveal.

Today, Italy's La Repubblica ripped that "independent" evidence to shreds:

This “evidence” has never been brought forward … “If it ever were brought forward,” said a source in Forte Braschi to la Repubblica, with a smile, “it would be discovered, with red faces, that it was Italian intelligence collected by SISMI at the end of the 1980’s, and shared with our friend Hamilton McMillan.”

Henry Brighthouse of Crooked Timber notes:

As best as I can piece this together, the timeline that La Repubblica is arguing for goes as follows. Italian intelligence collected [genuine] information that Hussein was trying to obtain raw uranium at the end of the 1980’s, before the First Gulf War. This information was stored by the branch of Italian intelligence dealing with weapon proliferation issues. When the invasion of Iraq was imminent, this information was brought out from the archives, and bundled together with fake documents in order to make the latter look more legitimate. This dossier was then circulated to UK and US intelligence. The latter didn’t bite at first, causing the director of Italian intelligence to use back channels to Hadley and to Wolfowitz via Ledeen. UK intelligence did bite, either then or later. UK intelligence later claimed that it had a source of intelligence independent from the faked documents saying that Iraq was trying to obtain uranium. However, according to La Repubblica the ‘independent’ source was also from Italian intelligence, and related to efforts by Hussein’s regime to obtain uranium in the 1980’s. Hence, it was for all intents and purposes irrelevant to the question of whether Hussein was trying to obtain uranium in post-sanctions Iraq.

Impeach Bush, Cheney, Blair and Berlusconi !!!

Question?

Today on Situation Room with Blitzer the RNC spoksman was on with Terry Mc Cauliffe and stated that it is a well known FACT that Wilson lied, when he brought back the information from Niger that Hussein had not tried to buy yellow cake. Have I missed something important here? As far as I know Wilson was completely correct in what he reported back. Any understanding of how the republicans can be claiming that Wilson lied?

found this article on the accusation that wilson lied.

pretty interesting, the article is pretty much stating that the republican accusation that Joe wilson lied about the Africa trip, are just that, accusations. I think it is another smear campaign in the face of indictments. they made this claim last year.

Suppose Wilson lied.

Suppose Wilson lied.

Suppose Wilson beats his dog.

Suppose Wilson wears dresses.

Does that mean outing the Spy he is married to IS legal?

Republicans better tear up their political playbook because that ship has sailed. Rove and company are on trial now.

You are right Jim

however Wolf Blitzer stood there and let this lie be stated as if it were true. I am sick of these republican lies and I want the country to be sick of them too and sick of hearing them stated on a TV news show as if they were the truth.

I expect that Media Matters already is on this one, but I am going to write to them anyway to make sure.

It is time that we call the RNC and their operatives on every lie.

And You are right Di!

Thanks Stydyofman in other

Thanks Stydyofman in other words the republican talking points are flat out lies!

While the administration was justified at the time in being concerned that Hussein was trying to build nuclear weapons, ``on the specifics of this I think Joe Wilson was right,'' said Michael O'Hanlon, a scholar of foreign policy studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

Criticism of Wilson

Republicans are attempting to defend Rove by discrediting Wilson, saying the former ambassador misled the public about why he was sent to Niger and what he found there.

Bush supporters such as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich contend that Wilson lied in claiming that Vice President Dick Cheney dispatched him on the mission to Niger. That echoes a Republican National Committee talking-points memo sent to party officials.

Wilson never said that Cheney sent him, only that the vice president's office had questions about an intelligence report that referred to the sale of uranium yellowcake to Iraq from Niger. Wilson, in his New York Times article, said CIA officials were informed of Cheney's questions.

``The agency officials asked if I would travel to Niger to check out the story so they could provide a response to the vice president's office,'' Wilson wrote.

Senate Report

The ``Wilson/Rove Research & Talking Points'' memo distributed by RNC Director of Television Carolyn Weyforth contends, ``Both the Senate Committee on Intelligence and the CIA found assessments Wilson made in his report were wrong.''

yep, that pretty much says it all LOL,

are we really that surprised? I read in my local paper that Democrats do not stand for anything moral? what is that supposed to mean, that democrats are immoral? or that we do not take a stand on moral issues, I would love to know just what they are talking about. because I have found more morality and caring on these pages then I have seen coming out of washington.

Amoral=liberal

They want people to believe that we as liberals are amoral. That way they don't have to prove immorality in our proposed programs or actions. Once they paint us as not really religious, then they say that we are "without moral compass", said enough times it becomes a "known fact". Makes one want to kick over some vats of kool-aid doesn't it? ;)

Forged Italian documents

David Kay claims that 'nobody' in the intelligence
community gave any weight to the faked Niger
letter: he says everyone already knew better.

The really tantalizing bit of this was a 'break-in' at
a Niger embassy. The timing of this burglary,
and the identity of the burglars are the end of
the string we want somebody to pull: the only
items stolen were reportedly some of the embassy's
official stationery. One of the strings leads to
Larry Franklin, the guy up for charges on giving
classified info to Israel!
